Four! is a high-energy, historic live jazz album that captures tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson performing at the Left Bank Jazz Society in Baltimore on April 21, 1968, backed by the legendary Wynton Kelly Trio (featuring pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Jimmy Cobb). Released decades later in 1994 by Verve Records, the recording showcases a fascinating stylistic contrast: Henderson’s adventurous, forward-thinking, and occasionally avant-garde saxophone lines soar over one of the most swinging, blues-drenched, and rock-solid rhythm sections in jazz history—famous for their work with Miles Davis. Covering classic standards and bebop staples like the title track "Four" and "On Green Dolphin Street," the album serves as a masterclass in live improvisation, capturing an electrifying, raw synergy where post-bop innovation perfectly fuses with classic hard-bop groove.
Ballmann Presents is an Ensemble class at RAMA Aalborg run by Yannick Ballmann. The students dive into three albums per semester and perform them for a live audience. This concert is the first live session of the semester, and to date, the first time the project is performing at the CDJ!
