Motto

"... We have no reason,
whether astonishment and love or hate,
to display Death, whom a fantastic mask
of tragic lament astonishingly disfigures.

From “Death Experience”, by Rainer Maria Rilke

Death is within us, as it is. And always. But it is us who determine his face, not him.

What do we expect? Why do we always expect everything and always immediately?

In this tremendous amount of changes we are living right now, the painful consequences and the huge variety of after-effects will need a long time to get digested. Many of our routines, things we took for granted, need to be reconsidered. For performing artists these times have been particularly challenging, still there was space to pause for a moment, to look at things from a new perspective, to reconnect with people in a different and new way. One of the undeniable facts, we can learn from this experience is, how deep we all are connected.

In every change one can witness as certain evolutionary peculiarity, which is that at first the undigested, the bottled-up feelings, the suppressed, and the hidden, is resurfacing. We are standing naked and helpless before each another, believing we can hide our bareness through a know-it-all attitude, but we are more transpicuous than ever. We are reacting like Jim Jarmusch´ zombies…

A prayer for the distorted, living dead in us, and to the awareness that we all are jointly responsible for what happens to us, to others and to our environment.

This Requiem is not only in memory of all the deceased known and unknown friends around the world, enemies, or strangers. It should also be a prayer for what will be left after the pandemic, when the waiting is over. A prayer for the fulfillment of what we hope for, of what we believe to deserve in all our expectations towards ourselves and the world.

With the lockdown, new paths had to be found, many musicians around the world streamed or pre-recorded small concerts, asking for feedback, music wishes, suggestions. So did I. Yet, to experience natural fears, to witness how creeping madness is getting the best of a good amount of people was a sort of an eye-opener, leading to this music I tried to put on paper.

After reconnecting with an old piece of mine called „Dans dement“ („Dance of madness“) which seems so befitting to the situation and since this pandemic is obviously the result of manmade madness, with such a terrible death toll, it has to be a ”Requiem” to mourn all the losses, but also as a memento mori for all of us, who are trying to go on creating, making a difference, connecting with each other, acknowledging that without humbleness and understanding, no real progress, no healing is possible and we are bound to end in the same madness over and over again.
